My Journey to Becoming a Platform Engineer

Platform Engineering

My journey to becoming a platform engineer was both challenging and rewarding. It started during my time as an apprentice working for an investment bank, my main day-day job roles where writing bash scripts, monitoring applications, analysing data and producing my results to the team. Not really much cloud work involved but I was doing my time and learning the basics of my job at hand. I started to look more into the world of DevOps and knew I wanted to work towards becoming one.The more digging I done I quickly found out that DevOps is more of a mixture of practices, tools and philosophies, so I decided to look at jobs more cloud based. Not really knowing much about Platform Engineering I decided to apply for a job at a Software company as a junior engineer. Having no previous knowledge of really anything cloud related I started to learn and use things such as AWS, Azure and Terraform on the side before my interview. Fast forward to now I have completed an intense 8 week academy and working in a project.I want to use this blog as an opportunity to share some of my knowledge in Azure/AWS using Terraform IaC, I hope to at least help one person with some of my content.

Stepping into the Cloud

My entry into the world of cloud began in August 2023, I was accepted into a Platforms Academy at a Software company in Belfast. During this academy we had an intense 8 week crash course covering various areas such as Azure, AWS, CI/CD, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes and more. Coming from a tech support role was challenging and I had to learn quickly on the job, which consisted of many late nights and endless amounts of coffee. But with persistence and an endeavour to become a highly skilled Platform Engineer I was successful in completing the academy and started on my first cloud project.
